What is a Death Doula?

It may be easier to start with what a Death Doula isn't. As a Death Doula, I don't take the place of family members, friends, or care professionals. I don't prescribe or administer medication, diagnose a life-limiting illness, or provide a prognosis for an illness.

As a Death Doula, I complement and enhance the care a person receives through the dying process. I participate alongside family, friends, medical teams, and other professional care providers to assist a person to plan for death and transition through the dying process.
I provide a holistic approach to a person with a life-limiting disease at any stage along the dying process. I may become involved with a dying person at the initial stage of diagnosis, as the dying process progresses, or after death with the person's loved ones as they transition through the grief and bereavement process. I work within a person-centred framework which gives people control over when I get involved and what support they wish me to provide.

I provide emotional, social, physical, and spiritual support to the dying and their loved ones. For the dying, support could be a listening ear, direct death care, creating a legacy project, or helping create an advanced care plan. I can hold space for people to breathe, process death, reflect on their relationship with the dying person, rest, recharge, and express their grief and bereavement.
